"For all the definitions, descriptions, and characterizations of leaders, there are only two that matter: Effective and Ineffective. Effective leaders lead successful teams that accomplish their missions. Ineffective leaders do not".
Leif Babin (Retired Navy Seal), "Extreme Ownership" 2016
Culture is the foundation stone for all success in an organization.
Culture needs to be
- Authentic
- In the DNA of all decisions
- Lived daily, and built ground up
Without a solid culture in place to build on, companies will struggle to build long term success.
"There are no bad teams, only bad leaders"
As a leader it is critical to take ownership for everything in your world. If the team are failing, then the first question to ask is "What didn't I give them to ensure they succeed". Always remember that when you point a finger in accusation, three fingers are pointing back at you.
"Every day should be a challenge"
If your role as a leader seems to have no challenge, then its guaranteed you are not digging past the facade of success, to seek how you can move from "great to unstoppable". Be relentless in everything you do as a leader, including being relentlessly kind to those around you.
"Plans are only as good as your ability to execute them"
Ensuring that planning and operations are kept as simple and understandable as possible is key to being able to achieve success. Set clear goals, track them and constantly look for ways to ensure those goals are relevant to the mission.
"Power lies in the freedom to act"
Allowing your team true empowerment is an unlock, if you set the mission aims and can avoid being directive in execution - teams will finds ingenious, efficient and out of the box solutions to win. An empowered team will want to give more back to the organization.
"An inclusive workplace promotes productivity, employee engagement, and innovation".
Diversity is not a buzz word or a statistic. True diversity is perhaps the strongest asset that a business can create. When everyone is the same, nothing can change for the better.
"Failure is the greatest teacher"
You need to celebrate success, and reward the team. However it is equally important to review everything, and find the 1% that was missing that will make success even greater next time. Celebrate failure as hard as you celebrate success - our greatest learnings are found there.
